A Family Winery
History
«Both my father José and my grandfather Gerardo were farmers and winemakers, former owners of vineyards. My childhood was lived in rural areas, always close to the vineyards, the winery, the olive groves, the orchards and the forest.
Nowdays, at Quinta do Porto Nogueira and Quinta da Escusa lands, our family led the planting of vineyards, favoring the terroirs formerly occupied by old vineyards, always aiming to produce exceptional grapes and make unique wines, under the brands Quinta Nogueira, Quinta da Escusa, Página and Berbereta.»
António
«Our family produces wines with passion and integrity, always respecting soil, climate, environment, always using agriculture’s best practices, always thinking about the welfare of the public that drinks and loves our wines.» -

Family Estates
Quinta do Porto Nogueira is located in Alguber, Cadaval, which distances circa 70 km north from Lisbon. Having its origins back to the first half of the XVIII century, this place was in the possession of the same family until 1980. Thereafter around 1980 it was donated to the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon. It is a Romana Vini estate since 2004.
Quinta da Escusa is located in the very particular location of Senhora da Escusa, near Rio Maior, which is circa 70 km northeast from Lisbon, between the rural villages of Quintas and Vale Barco. Some of Quinta da Escusa's lands belonged to the grandparents and parents of the current owners who, for decades, have worked there doing agriculture and viticulture.

Denomination and Symbol
Romana Vini
Quinta do Porto Nogueira's secular house is leaning against the Roman Bridge over the Arnóia little river, used to be the passage from the Roman road that connected Collippo (near Leiria) to Eburobrittium (Óbidos), which would finally led to Olisipo (Lisbon). The bridge witnessed the Roman presence in the region and inspired the denomination Romana Vini, a Family Winery.

Denomination and Symbol
4-Leaf Clover
The 4-leaf clover is the symbol of our winery and is the aggregating element of our brands. It is a rare herb, of good omen, whose symbology goes back to Celtic traditions. The 4 leaves in cross symbolize the sacred, the unity, the balance of nature in its perfect cycle: the 4 seasons, the 4 phases of the moon, the 4 cardinal points, the 4 elements of nature.
It is this balance, this perfect and harmonious cycle of nature that we seek to respect, integrate and reflect in each of our wines.

A Niche Player -
Truth and QualityWe are totally focus on quality, not quantity. As a niche player, we work to be recognized for our rigor in making unique wines, respecting the specifics of each terroir, vinifying separately the grapes from each vineyard and each region. We work exclusively on our own grapes, so that our wines reflect the true expression of our terroirs. The whole process is aimed at creating true and serious wines, always proving their own identity.
We only choose the best grapes, sacrificing yields for quality: tailored pruning to the profile of our wines, pre-harvested grapes, curls selection while harvesting and at cellar entry, and final selection of berries on the table. This successive selection process ensures that only the best fruit is used in the process of producing our wines. In the cellar, we always follow healthy and well-being driven practices.

Sustainability and Biodiversity
-
Sustainable Agriculture
We have planted our vineyards in the best terroirs, which have been occupied by vine growing for hundreds of years now. Intervention in good time, the rigor, the responsibility and our affection for the practice of wine producing, are the greatest guarantee of quality of our wines.
Our vineyards are cultivated with low soil mobilization and we do not use herbicides. Soil enrichment is made with natural manure. We adopt environmentally sustainable practices and we are certified by the Integrated Production Standards.
In 2019 we began the implementation of a 3-year plan for the certification of our vineyards in Organic or Biologic Mode.

Biodiversity
We highly value the local and global environment. At Quinta do Porto Nogueira and Quinta da Escusa we enhance biodiversity. All the energy consumed in our winery and at wine tourism is produced in Quinta do Porto Nogueira, from renewable sources (solar), which ensures our energy self-sufficiency.
We are a winery that positively compensates, in net terms, all the CO2 impacts generated by tractors, forklifts and transportation. To this end, we maintain a permanent afforestation and reforestation program on the grounds surrounding the winery and vineyards, certified by FSC - Forest Stewardship Council standards.
